Mapping Digital Space

What an unexpectedly fun and interesting assignment. I am obviously just a visitor in most cases. This visual really makes me rethink how I am using the Internet.
Admittedly, I do a lot of shopping via online. Whether it is for clothing, food, things for the house or school. Amazon and Kohl's are my favorites but I could have added a few more. Also in the Personal Visitor quadrant is my Chicago Bear App ( Football fanatic) and Kayak. I love to travel and I am always checking airfares. Uber is another favorite, along with Uber Eats. Thank goodness for them both. Soaring heights International is a site I visit often for emotional support.
Another place where I could have added more pics was in the Visitor Professional quadrant. This is just a snap shot of the things I use for classroom and professional use. In the past, I have been very involved in my teacher union. I have held several positions. I'm often visiting the IEA and NEA websites. I use both Pintrest and You Tube personally and professionally so I placed them on the line. I also displayed some of the more common sites I visit in the Professional Visitor quadrant but I could have added many more. I just picked the ones I use the most.
The obvious winner on my map is Facebook. I use it socially to keep in contact with family, friends and former students after they turn 18. Currently I use it the most for the online support groups. As I stated in an earlier post, I'm a recent widow (9 months). I have found a huge supportive community on FB or younger widows like myself. Honestly, these groups have been a lifesaver and I have met some amazing people. I do also use FB professionally. I talk to other 4th grade teachers, math teachers, union members via Facebook where we support one another and share ideas and resources. In addition, I read and talk on 2 other blogs that are written by other widows. Snapchat is just for fun, we all love a good filter.
The last quadrant is sad to me.The only way I really professionally talk to people outside of email and Google Drive docs is through Class Dojo. It's been a great way to keep in contact with parents and students. I have a Twitter account but never use it. After creating this map, that is about to change. This assignment has been quite the eye opener.

I'm really surprised as everyone's analysis. I thought more more people use twitter accounts in general, and more teachers professionally. That doesn't appear to be the case. I think you'll enjoy the level of engagement on twitter for educators. There's a lot out there for us to become connected. I think it has advantages over FB in some areas, and in others FB is more robust. I'd love to hear your reflections once implementing twitter more.
ReplyDeleteHi Julianne!! I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, but am glad that you have reached out to several venues for support. You shouldn't have to go through this alone. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Next, this assignment is a great reflection of ourselves!! There are endless ways we each use the Internet. I enjoyed observing your digital map and ways that I may want to add to my map for various reasons. I don't think it is sad that your professional resident quadrant is skim. I believe we all need to have a healthy balance between work and personal. If I didn't draw the line, I'd have parents contacting me late at night bugging me about assignments or issues with their child (lesson learned already). We all need to detach when we leave the school and take time to rest and enjoy our own personal lives.
ReplyDeleteI love the value you found in creating your map! Consider revisiting this one and creating a new one a year from now and seeing how they have changed.
